Journey House A O. Smith Foundation

After finding a layette, bassinet and other baby items in her new room, she gave a teary-eyed thanks to PATH family programs manager Elizabeth Jimenez. In September, Mckenzie caught a bus and a train, then hiked up a steep hill in the scorching sun to apply for housing at the Los Angeles Dream Center in Echo Park, an arm of an evangelical megachurch with homelessness and drug abuse programs. In an email, the group rejected her as “incompatible” with their operation. Young adults who age out of foster care after such heightened trauma are at serious risk of repeating the cycle of homelessness and losing their kids to foster care. It’s an ominous harbinger for Los Angeles, where multigenerational homelessness is not uncommon — and the system is not equipped to meet the needs of people with such profound struggles.

They forged informal family relations, with play moms, dads and sisters, and formed a street crew called Dedikated Soldiers, or DKS, an offshoot of an older homeless group, the Hollywood Dogs. From 2020 through 2021, the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority screened 1,413 homeless pregnant women; 229, or 1 in 6, were housed through the agency. “These women have hopes and dreams like anybody else,” said Heather Carmichael, executive director of My Friend’s Place, a leading Hollywood youth homeless agency. “A baby could represent new possibilities … something unsullied by all the tragedy the individual has experienced,” said Khiara Bridges, a UC Berkeley law professor who has studied poverty and pregnancy. Finding a homeless woman in an advanced stage of pregnancy in a tent in the heart of Hollywood’s real estate boom is shocking.

Cowboys riding the range on horseback in the 1800s to measure a blaze isn’t quite the same as measuring by satellite the acres burned. “I’m going to allow an opportunity for every single member of the House to vote their conscience and their will,” he had said. And it raised questions about whether the political turmoil that has roiled the United States had effectively destroyed what has long been a strong bipartisan consensus in favor of projecting American values around the world.

OAK FOREST RECOVERY

People with similar issues, such as vets, mental health consumers, people with diabetes, trauma issues, etc. live like college roommates, each paying approximately $500 to $900 monthly in a fully-furnished house. The Collaborative Housing Homeowner furnishes the house, pays all utilities, does not collect a Security Deposit and does not require a resident to pay for a credit or background check. Residents pay rent from their disability checks or other income directly to the Homeowner. “Througheducation, relationships, and exposure, we empower families to move out ofpoverty and develop top talent. At the end of the day, if we are not moving ourkids towards college/institutions of higher learning, full-time employment, orthe military, then we are just playing a game.

Just say no to Hollywood tents

For months, it had been uncertain whether Congress would approve new funding for Ukraine, even as momentum shifted in Moscow’s favor. That prompted a wave of anxiety in Kyiv and in Europe that the United States, the single biggest provider of military aid to Ukraine, would turn its back on the young democracy. Ann’s father, Eddie, died in January 2021 at age 30 in a head-on collision at Hyperion Avenue and Glendale Boulevard in Silver Lake. Mckenzie’s close friend Jennifer Miller also died hours after she had been at Mckenzie’s apartment. A court-ordered assessment found that Ann had reached all her developmental milestones and was happy, with the exception of the trauma over separation from her mother, Mckenzie said.

‘A homeless runaround’

Founded in 1983, Journey House provides emotional support and guidance, as well as financial aid to help them with the cost of attending college and vocational schools. Incredibly massive wildfires burned across the North American landscape long before European settlers arrived, said Marlon and Meunier. They know that millions of acres burned by studying tree rings and paleo records, then compiling estimates of fire seasons or the approximate size of acreage burned in a single season. The U.S. Forest Service reported as early as 1912 that tree rings showed fires in California more than 1,600 years earlier. Since 2014 Journey House has provided beds to 12 step members that are transitioning from halfway type settings to fill the gap between hard rules and simple accountability.

Annual Report

But for young women with backgrounds like Mckenzie’s, homelessness and motherhood are often less a decision than a destiny. Despite L.A.’s stifling September heat, she was wrapped in a heavy pink sweatshirt, sniffling and blowing her nose. Now 7½ months pregnant, she had developed a serious respiratory infection; three of her homeless friends moved into her tent to help her recover. Educating the public is an important aspect of prevention, intervention, and a holistic approach to address human trafficking at every level of recruitment, victimization, and recovery. Provides tenant referrals to the house, responds to any tenant problems in a timely manner, visits regularly to help with tenant needs and insures that the house is properly run. Tenants attend weekly support groups, help with neighborhood projects and provide support for other residents.

FAMILY SUPPORT

Chunks of her hair had been torn out and she weighed less than 100 pounds, said Mckenzie and Cat, who had been just blocks away searching for her daughter. She was one of the face-painted fans known as Juggalos who followed the outsider band Insane Clown Posse. The group had a big homeless following; 15% of those surveyed at a Los Angeles youth drop-in center in 2016 identified as Juggalos. Mckenzie was molested by a friend’s stepfather, according to Ventura County Superior Court criminal records, and landed in a psychiatric facility and then a group home, her mother said in a civil lawsuit.

The heart and soul of Oak Forest Recovery is our exceptional team.

Clients were referred by the Los Angeles County Probation Department to live at Journey House. Brother Tim would advocate for and enroll clients into private schools. Journey House continued to provide supportive services to further their success. Does not have the capacity to meet the mental health and substance abuse treatment needs of all of its homeless people.

It's certain that fires are missing from the list because they weren't reported at the time, possibly because they didn't really affect towns or many people, said Jennifer Marlon, a senior research scientistat Yale School of the Environment. Since Russia’s invasion in 2022, Congress has appropriated $113 billion in funding to support Ukraine’s war effort. In the end, even in the face of an ouster threat from ultraconservative members, he circumvented the hard-line contingent of lawmakers that once was his political home and relied on Democrats to push the measure through. The legislation includes $60 billion for Kyiv; $26 billion for Israel and humanitarian aid for civilians in conflict zones, including Gaza; and $8 billion for the Indo-Pacific region. It would direct the president to seek repayment from the Ukrainian government of $10 billion in economic assistance, a concept supported by former President Donald J. Trump, who had pushed for any aid to Kyiv to be in the form of a loan.

Collaborative Housing offers an immediate housing solution for people in Los Angeles, providing a place to call home. Founded in 1938, Journey House has grown by combining exceptional service with leading edge technology to meet the needs of our expanding customer base. We have survived the constant changes in our industry by adapting to the changing environment and by coming up with innovative solutions to the many challenges.

“Those essential items like notebooks, pencils, glue, crayons, things they need just to get started in school," said Myers, who is the director of community partnerships with Journey House. I heard of Journey House many years ago, but once I turned twenty four, I realized that I needed help to transfer from PCC to a university. Jorge was very helpful in getting me into Cal State Dominguez Hills. I also enjoy the Journey House social events and being around other former foster youth.

Today, Journey House provides services for former foster youth as they emancipate from the foster care system and transition into adulthood. DID YOU KNOW that a child in the foster care or probation state system, who cannot be reunified with his family or become adopted, remains in foster care until he or she ages out at 18 years old with the option to stay in foster care up to age 21? On the day of their “emancipation”, they are expected to be able to provide their own food, shelter, clothing, transportation, medical care, and college expenses with little additional assistance. With two years of planning, organizing, and proposal writing by members of the prison ministries, consultants, and colleagues, Brother Tim opened Journey House in March of 1983, as a six-bed group home for boys on probation and in foster care.

Committed to serving victims where they are, Journey Out staff provide those who are on the prostitution tracks of Los Angeles with make up bags full of basic needs items, snacks, and information about our services. In addition to our contact information, we include resources for emergency shelters both within and outside of the state of California. The label is discreet and easy to conceal from pimps and traffickers but also gives victims a lifeline. The Journey Out Empowerment Program offers assistance to individuals seeking a way out of sex trafficking and commercial sexual exploitation. Clients participate in survivor-led empowerment groups that focus on getting out of the life.

Cat has struggled with poverty, and suffered mental and physical health issues, domestic violence and the loss of Mckenzie and a son to foster care. Additionally, the Survivor Advocate trains clinicians at hospitals throughout Los Angeles, on best practices for identifying possible trafficking victims; as well as Human Trafficking 101 training. The advocate also participates in local community building, educational and awareness events, which focus on youth and other diverse and vulnerable groups. We share our stories to create lasting cultural and systemic changes in child welfare and the broader social work landscape.

We have been successful because we have always maintained our focus on clients needs. In the workforcereadiness program, Journey House offers training in soft skills, customerservice, resume writing, financial and investment training, and officetechnology. Through herhard work, Markesha was accepted at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville(UW-P). She earned her Bachelors of Science in Industrial Engineering inDecember 2014 and won several awards for her leadership. Her biggest award wasfrom the entire UW system for academic achievement, which was given to justthree seniors.
